Getting Started with ASP.NET
Trying to find information on our websites is often a frustrating task. I often spend time aggregating information and posting it here. However, multiply this effort by thousands of Microsoft bloggers and it only contributes to the problem.
One of the hardest tasks is trying to find a starting point. If you’re new to the platform where do you go? Then once you arrive at any number of our sites the real grunt work begins. Change happens over time and I’m glad to say that we’ve redesigned the ASP.NET website. T
he four large buttons at the top of the home page make it simple:
Click Getting Started and you find 5 choices
Click Number 2 and you can get access to FREE software via the WebsiteSpark Program. Not the “Free” Express Edition, but the full commercial editions.
Options 1, 3, and 4 are self-descriptive, but Option 5 was a task unto itself before they simplified it here.
Hopefully visiting this site will make the process of learning new platforms or just finding the right resources a whole lot simpler.

Facebook SDK
In case you missed this information. Read the overview to get more detailed
information about the Facebook SDK Toolkit. The goal is to provide a Facebook Client Library that is similar to the Client Libraries provided for PHP and JavaScript. There are samples and tools for helping develop Facebook apps on the .NET platform (ASP.NET, Silverlight, WPF and winform).

Azure Training Kit and Services Management tool – April Updates Available
Azure Services Training KitToday we released an updated version of the Azure Services Training Kit. The first Azure Services Training Kit was released during the week of PDC and it contained all of the PDC hands-on labs. Since then, the Azure Services Evangelism team has been creating new content covering new features in the platform.![]()
The kit now includes the following content covering Windows Azure, .NET Services, SQL Services, and Live Services:
- 11 hands-on labs – including new hands-on labs for PHP and Native Code on Windows Azure.
- 18 demo scripts – These demo scripts are designed to provide detailed walkthroughs of key features so that someone can easily give a demo of a service
- 9 presentations – the presentations used for our 3 day training workshops including speaker notes.
- 2 additional hands-on labs for Windows Azure PHP and Native Code support
Azure Services Management Tools
The Azure Services Management Tools include an MMC SnapIn and Windows PowerShell cmdlets that enable a user to configure and manage several Azure Services including .NET Access Control Services, and the .NET Workflow Service. These tools can be helpful when developing and testing applications that use Azure Services. For instance, using these tools you can view and change .NET Access Control Rules, and deploy and view workflows. The November release of the management tools was downloaded 2190 times.Download here
PHP Support for the Azure Services Platform
Support for PHP on the Azure Services Platform was announced at MIX09. I’ve added a few of the highlights below.
- FastCGI: allows developers to deploy and run web applications written with 3rd party programming languages such as PHP.
- NET Full Trust: provides developers with a level of flexibility in Windows Azure that removes limitations on .NET Libraries which require full trust (including .NET Services) .
- Geolocation: provides developers with the ability to specify a location for their applications and data to build responsive services with lower network latency as well as the capability to meet location-based regulatory and legal requirements.

Alice’s Adventures in an XBAP
One of our initiatives at Microsoft this year is focused on the client. When I joined Microsoft over 17 years ago, one of my primary jobs at Microsoft was evangelizing Windows. It was in the DNA of all us in the field. We demoed, demoed and demoed some more. It’s hard to imagine that the sigma button (sum) on the tool bar was revolutionary.
Today, with advances in both processor, GPU and the evolution of the .NET framework, we’re able to see innovative new applications. One such XBAP (WPF Browser Application) application is called Turning the Pages by Armadillo Systems. The British Library makes available 19 very rare items that would be normally very difficult to get access to peruse. Hear are a couple screen shots to whet your appetite and click here to check it out.
.NET 3.5 Enhancements Training Kit Available
It appears this training kit became available yesterday – the download includes ppts, hands-on labs, demos, and event materials.
